In 1988, Clinton J. Roberts
founded Alternative Sentencing Consultants, Inc. The name of the firm
was changed on 1/1/09 to Clinton J. Roberts & Associates, Inc. The
firm’s purpose is to assist attorneys in their representation of clients
in Federal and State cases providing mitigation services as well as
prison advocacy.
Mr. Roberts has over 25 years of professional experience in the criminal
justice system and has worked on numerous high profile cases in Federal
and State courts including death penalty cases. Prior to founding the
consulting firm Mr. Roberts was employed by the State of Connecticut
Judicial Department, Office of Adult Probation where his
responsibilities included writing court ordered presentence
investigations and reports, providing assistance to the State of
Connecticut General Assembly researching and advising the Judiciary
Committee regarding legislation impacting the State Judicial Department,
probation and pretrial diversionary programs. Mr. Roberts also was the
Program Director of the Pretrial Diversionary Project/Community
Resources for Justice, Inc. in Hartford, Connecticut.
Mr. Roberts has lectured before county, state and national bar
associations regarding mitigation in criminal cases, sentencing and
prison advocacy and other criminal justice and related public policy
issues. Mr. Roberts was selected as a panel member for the Connecticut
Bar Association Criminal Division, Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association
and the Connecticut Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. Mr. Roberts
has been approved in the United States District Courts for the 2nd and
3rd Circuits to assist in providing mitigating expertise in cases under
the Criminal Justice Act (CJA). Mr. Roberts is a volunteer for the
Connecticut Innocence Project; a member of The Sentencing Project in
Washington D.C.; member of the National Legal Aid & Defender Association
(National Association of Mitigation Specialists and Sentencing
Advocates); and an associate member of the National Association of
Criminal Defense Attorneys. Mr. Roberts was also a contributing editor
of the Connecticut Prisoner’s Rights Manual (1997, ed.)
